When I started H is for Hawk, I loved it. It reminded me of the science writing class I took in college. The descriptions of nature drew me in and made me excited to read more.
I saw this book on display at my local library, and the thing that made me check it out was the description on the back. “One summer, Melissa Cistaro’s mother drove off without explanation. Devastated, Melissa and her brothers were left to pick up the pieces, always tormented by the thought: Why did their mother abandon them?” My first thought was “ouch, that’s brutal.”
When I first heard about Reese Witherspoon’s movie, Wild, I had not yet heard of the book. I just knew that this movie was getting a lot of praise for being a great portrayal of a strong woman, and it was basically white woman inspiration porn.
