Nervous Conditions follows Tambu, a young girl who grew up on an impoverished homestead in Zimbabwe in the 1960s.
Anya’s Ghost is the story of Anya. The teenaged daughter of a single mother, Anya’s family moved to the US from Russia just before she started school. Anya attends a private high school (the third worst in the state, according to her) where she tries her best to blend in with her all-American classmates.
Sabriel takes place in a society reminiscent of the early 20th century, but in a world where magic is known, though denied at the higher levels of society. There are two countries: Ancelestierre, which is normal human land, and The Old Kingdom, which is where magic runs rampant.
I’m not surprised at all that this was on the New York Times Bestseller list and has book club notes and suggestions in the back. If you’re looking for a book that prompts deep thought and compelling conversation, this is definitely a good pick.
