A Much Needed Poetic Respite

This is a short collection of poetry, compiled from Feminista Jones’s poems from 2004 to 2017.
I really wanted to review a book about unions for Labor Day, but most of the ones I found were either pretty expensive or not really what I wanted to focus on. Then, I remembered that I have Emergent Strategy.
I watched the movie first. I know, I know - “ALWAYS read the book before you watch the movie!” And that is a good rule of thumb most of the time. But I love the actresses in Hidden Figures and the story looked awesome and I didn’t have time to read the book yet. (Yes, I know. “Excuses, excuses...”) SO, I watched the movie first. You know what? It made me want to read the book.
In November of 2017, I went to a conference called Compassionate Communities: We Choose All of Us. There, I attended several workshops and keynote speakers around subjects surrounding social justice and meeting the needs of the most marginalized in our communities. One of the keynote speakers was adrienne maree brown, co-editor of Octavia’s Brood, a collection of science fiction stories inspired by Octavia Butler. I loved listening to brown speak, and purchased a copy of the book at the conference.
